The month of October will bring two new things to the Parrish Art Museum, a unique format art class for adults older than 15 and an in-depth art workshop for children older than 7. Beginning Friday, October 10th, Eric Dever, abstract artist, will teach "Materials and Methods" for adults, and beginning Saturday, October 18th, Lori Colavito, teaching artist, will lead a "Mixed Media Workshop" for children.

"Materials and Methods introduces participants to the language, materials, and techniques of visual art, and provides an opportunity for adults to explore art making, perhaps for the first time," Cara Conklin-Wingfield, Parrish Art Museum Director of Education, said.

The adult class features flexible and unexpected approaches to color, line and form in both abstract and representational pieces. Each class will include a guided instruction and experimentation with drawing or painting. Mediums used will include charcoal, pastel, watercolor and acrylic paint.

"Mixed Media Workshop for children is a series of four two-hour sessions, providing expanded amount of time for looking, learning and creating. Both classes explore the creative process by focusing on the works on view in the galleries which inspire and encourage each participant's artistic development," Jennifer Duque, Parrish Art Museum Family and Children's Programs Director said.

The children's class is designed to allow young artists to spend time creating their own pieces while learning about and appreciating the art in the galleries. The workshop is aimed at strengthening children's abilities to look at and understand art, and to have confidence and enthusiasm about creating and sharing their own pieces.

Each series of classes is priced at $120 for Parrish members and $150 for non-members. Materials and Methods runs Friday, October 10th, 17th, 24th and 31st from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Mixed Media Workshop run Saturday, October 18th and 25th and Saturday, November 1st and 8th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Parrish Art Museum is located at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. For more information, visit parrishart.org.
