Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe will present their latest work, There is Something Wrong with the Stenographer, at the Boo-Hooray Summer Rental this summer.
“I have been astonished, perplexed and enlightened by Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe for years,” noted Johan Kugelberg of Boo-Hooray. “This is hands down the most baffling and enticing art event to take place out east in a Long Island Minute.”
Freeman grew up in Maine on an organic farm but moved to Manhattan and graduated from NYU with a degree in film. His mother’s profession in astrology is often referenced in his work.
Lowe, half-brother to Chad Lowe and Rob Lowe, was born in Ohio. He met Freeman while he was finishing his MFA at Columbia.
Their first exhibition together at the Ballroom Marfa in Texas was Hello Meth Lab in the Sun – which was a huge hit. Their collaboration continued with Hello Meth Lab with a View at Art Basel Fair in Miami.
Now, the duo comes to Montauk to with their latest in the series, There is Something Wrong with the Stenographer. The single wall work assemblage is 176″ by 100″. The duo’s ongoing partnership aims to showcase studio archives that are presented in their rawest forms.
Within their works, you can spot an eclectic mix of items – such as the dust jacket For Guided By Invoices, water-stained real estate hand-outs, Rastafarian motorcycle gangs, a Practical Guide to Successful Still Life Photography, a sweating shampoo bottle, light wave therapy, narcotic moisturizer, and more.
There is Something Wrong with the Stenographer will be on display from Saturday, August 4 to Friday, August 17.
There will be an opening reception Saturday, August 4 from 4 to 7 p.m.
