On Sunday, July 17th, the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) Marine Program will be celebrating the debut of their latest venture.
“We’re excited to launch our new magazine publication On the Water & In the Field. Our original publication entitled On the Water, was a bi-monthly first issued in the 1980s with a primary focus on commercial fishing and industry-specific news,” said Marine Program Outreach Manager, Kimberly Barbour. “With this new launch, we’ll still include a focus on fisheries and aquaculture, but we are refocusing the content to best showcase the main other program areas of CCE Marine Program as well. The content will have a special emphasis on the great community partners and citizen science volunteers who contribute efforts to the work we carry out ‘on the water and in the field.'”
The CCE Marine celebration, taking place at Southampton Arts Center (SAC), will also include a special screening of the latest episode of On the Water & In the Field, the Cornell Cooperative Extension’s new magazine show. Featured topics in the episode include aquaculture, horseshoe crab monitoring, marine and coastal habitat restoration, and more.
“The goal is for this publication to serve as an outreach tool to connect the general public to the science based work we are conducting,” added Barbour. “Perhaps more importantly though, we want to put this information in context of how this is making a difference to the health of our waters and encourage the public to get involved and really play a role as stewards of our marine resources. “
Following the screening, guests are welcome to enjoy local oysters and wine and have an opportunity to meet and greet Cornell Cooperatives Extension Marine Program experts. The stories featured in this episode are sure to inspire you and will help connect attendees to the importance of our marine environment.
Some of the featured stories include: Back to the Bays Stewardship Spotlight: How the Paddling Community is Giving back to our Bays, Pike’s Beach Horseshoe Crab Monitoring: Citizen Science and Conservation at work, and Aquaculture for All: Showcasing Community Gardens and Commercial Operations.
“The launch event at Southampton Arts Center will feature a screening of the news magazine show we produce, also entitled On the Water & In the Field, which will give an in depth look into some of the stories featured in the print magazine,” she explained. “Following the screening, guests will get to check out the magazine while enjoying a reception featuring Little Creek Oysters, Channing Daughters wine, and music by Don & Rachel Bracken. We will have many of the community members and CCE scientific professionals featured in the magazine and show at the event, and we welcome the general public to join us as well.”
The On the Water & In the Field Launch Party will take place on Sunday, July 17th, with a screening at 5 p.m., followed by the reception. Tickets are $12.
