The French Heritage Society Honors Caroline Weber

Thursday, April 11, 2019

With the restoration of Notre Dame in people's thoughts around the world, the mission of The French Heritage Society, to preserve France's defining architecture, has never been more in focus. The Society bestowed its third annual Book Award upon Caroline Weber, author of Proust's Duchess: How Three Celebrated Women Captured the Imagination of Fin-de-Siècle Paris, at a private Upper East Side club earlier this month. In presenting the award, Jennifer Herlein, executive director of French Heritage, spoke on behalf of Christian Draz, French Heritage Society Book Award Co-Chair and Board Member: "Whatever offense her three society divas may have taken at being used as creative fodder for Proust's satirical fiction, they would surely be highly flattered by the extraordinary lengths to which Caroline went to document the truth of their real and often difficult lives."

Such special programs as performing in abandoned European synagogues, creating special nights for autistic children and outreach to bring younger generations into the fold mark Fischer as a social innovator as well as a world recognized conductor. The evening’s co-chairs were Sylvia Hemingway, Heidi-Lee-Komaromi, Christine Schott Ledes, Laine Siklos, and Stephanie Stokes. The Budapest Festival Orchestra will return to New York August 4th for the Mostly Mozart Festival. Friends will be invited to the annual private Hamptons Summer Chamber Concert, to enjoy a brief concert under the summer sky.

Martin And Jean Shafiroff Host Cocktails For The NY Mission Society Gala

Thursday, April 4, 2019

Lighting the way for equity in urban education, Jean Shafiroff and Martin Shafiroff opened their Park Avenue home for a cocktail reception honoring the Mission Society. "This is the kick-off for our gala," Mission Society of New York President Elsie McCabe Thompson told us. "This year we're calling it the Founding Families Gala, a theme that underscores not only the history of Mission Society but the history that roughly parallels the history of New York. It was just two decades after NYC was the capitol of the nation that Mission Society was founded. Back then, NYC was less than 100,000 people. We've always tried to take care of those new residents who were less able and that's part of our story."
