Moriches Bay Project Hosting 5th Annual "Save The Bay" Oyster Fling

The 5th Annual "Save the Bay" Oyster Fling, held in support of the Moriches Bay Project, will take place on Saturday, June 29.

The soiree, which is the Moriches Bay Project's biggest fundraising effort of the year, will fittingly be presented near the water, at the Village Marina in Westhampton Beach.

"The MBP is overwhelmed by the continued support we receive from the local community and businesses - without their help we could not do what we do," Laura Fabrizio, Moriches Bay Project Co-Founder, shared.

Starting at 7 p.m., partygoers will enjoy fare prepared by Buoy One of Westhampton, live music from Doreen Grimaldi and Down A Fifth, coffee from Hampton Coffee Company, a cigar bar, a silent and Chinese auction, and more. A Fling favorite, the Oyster Fling, will return to provide guests with the unique and hands-on opportunity to partake in an activity that directly positively impacts Moriches Bay and champions MBP's mission.

In its first year alone (2012), the Moriches Bay Project added 50,000 oysters to the Bay, established two oyster farms that housed up to 5,000 oysters each and created the first oyster bed in Moriches Bay. While that's quite impressive, last year MBP added a whopping 500,000 oysters to the Bay, resulting in the filtration of 25 million gallons of water each day. Another 2018 MBP success is the removal of 786 pounds of nitrogen from the Bay, which is double the 2017 effort. Last year, 5,061 volunteers joined the Moriches Bay Project's efforts to better water quality through community events, educational programs and workshops.

"Together we are cleaning our bays one oyster at a time," Fabrizio added.

The small grass roots not for profit 501c3 project's mission is to "improve the quality of the water in Moriches Bay and turn it back to its natural state of health," which it does through oyster farming and eel grass planting, as well as by bringing awareness to the cause and getting the community involved.

General admission to the 5th Annual "Save the Bay" Oyster Fling is $175.

Village Marina is located at 1 Library Avenue in Westhampton Beach. For more information, visit morichesbayproject.org.
