On Saturday, November 21st, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork is celebrating the release of local musician Nancy Remkus’ fourth album, “Songs for Growing,” during a special concert. Starting at 2 p.m., attendees will be treated to the musician’s new songs, which are packed with heart and spirit.
Remkus, a Sag Harbor native, will donate the profits from the afternoon to a local children’s organization. “We are so pleased and honored that Nancy has named Katy’s Courage as beneficiary of the proceeds raised from the concert release of her new CD, ‘Songs for Growing,'” shared Brigid Collins. “Our daughter, Katy, loved Nancy very much, and we are moved too that she has a song on the new album remembering our little girl, titled ‘Katy’s Song.'” Proceeds from the concert, as well as all online sales of “Katy’s Song” will benefit Katy’s Courage.
At just 14-years-old Remkus, along with her best friend Joyce, taught themselves how to play guitar and Remkus hasn’t stopped making music since. At college she majored in music therapy and continued her studies by achieving a Master’s Degree. A firm believer that music brings people together, Remkus joined the Sag Harbor School District as a full-time music teacher, where she also taught kindergarten, second and fifth grade, general music, guitar, resource room and early intervention, and helped found the school’s Morning Program, where all students, teachers, administrators and family members begin each day in the gymnasium, singing and celebrating life.
Katy’s Courage, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was founded in 2012 in memory of Katy Stewart, who passed away from a rare form of pediatric liver cancer, hepatoblastoma, at just 12-years-old. The charity is dedicated to raising funds in support of local school scholarships, pediatric cancer research and Katy’s Kids @ CMEE.
“We are very much looking forward to the event,” expressed Collins. Admission to family friendly, interactive concert is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
