Normally a sea of pink takes over Tanger Outlets in Riverhead early in the morning of a special autumn day in support of the fight against breast cancer, however this year North Fork Breast Health Coalition and Tanger Outlets are commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month by joining forces to host a "2020 5K Virtual Race."
The week-long "TangerFIT Virtual 5K" will be held Sunday, October 11 through Sunday, October 18. Walkers or runners may register and pick up a race packet, which includes a race shirt, a mask and hand sanitizer, the week prior to the event at Tanger.
"This is an important fundraiser. The breast cancer community has been hit hard by the effects of COVID-19," noted Susan Ruffini, president of NFBHC. "Vital surgeries have been postponed, treatments have been reduced or in some cases halted, healing services have been cancelled and patients can no longer bring their caretaker with them to appointments."
The top finishers in each category will be awarded a medal.
"Our organization has also been affected," Ruffini said. "We have had to halt our massage therapy and reflexology services, move our yoga to an online setting that is inaccessible for some survivors and thrivers, and cancel our annual Pink Pearl Gala that raises critical funds for our grants program. At the same time, we are experiencing an uptick in grant requests and see a need for increased financial aid."
The "TangerFIT Virtual 5K" registration fee is $25.
The North Fork Breast Health Coalition, an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, provides support to local breast cancer patients through programs such as Helping Hand grants.
