Millions of dogs are slaughtered each year for food consumption. Especially over the past few years, animal activists have fought back at festivals like the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Animal shelters across the United States have tried their best to work collaboratively with animal activists in countries where consuming dog meat is popular, and transport the dogs that are at risk to safe shelters before it's too late.
Kent Animal Shelter
in Calverton is one of the many shelters that has tirelessly worked to rescue dogs worldwide. Dixie, one of several dogs sent from Thailand by the SOI Dog Foundation, arrived at John F. Kennedy
Airport on Saturday, August 27th. She was saved from the Asian dog meat trade and is now safe, receiving proper food, water, shelter, and veterinary care.
"Our concern for pets in crisis knows no boundaries, and we're going to help animals around the world in any way we can and change their lives forever," said Pamela Green, Executive Director of the Kent Animal Shelter. "The inhumane practices of the dog meat trade in Asia are heinous, and it's got to stop."
Every year countless dogs are inhumanely transported from Thailand to neighboring countries. There, they are butchered by barbaric methods, though many dogs suffocate long before they reach the neighboring countries.
Soi Dog Foundation is a not-for-profit, legally registered charitable organization in Thailand, the United States, Australia, the UK, France, Canada, and Holland that helps the homeless, neglected and abused dogs and cats of Asia. Now more than ever, organizations like Soi Dog Foundation and others are working to end the horrific dog meat trade.
