- Following the example of Bellport, Riverhead is forming a Valentine's Cash Mob
to shop at downtown businesses on Saturday, February 11 and give the heart of Riverhead a mid-winter infusion of affection and cash.
The mob will form at 11 a.m. in the parking lot behind the old Swezey's building, on the Peconic Riverfront. There, everyone will get in a group photo, get instructions and maps, and get in the spirit. Each member of the mob will bring with them $20 in cash. At approximately 11:15 a.m., a horn will sound, and the mob will go shopping.
Where will the mob shop? There are many great local businesses downtown where shoppers will find Valentine's cards, gifts, chocolates and flowers; an amazing selection of shampoos and soaps; quilting and sewing supplies; clothing; bicycles and bike outfitting; gift certificates for heart-healthy exercise classes; hardware; art; décor and housewares; lottery tickets; piñatas; grocery items; dining; and much more. Shoppers may find it hard to stop at $20!
"This is the Quiet Season for East End businesses, and it can be even quieter downtown. It can be a very difficult time for local businesses," said Nancy Swett
, founder of iloveriverhead. "We hope a mid-winter boost will fortify our local downtown businesses until things pick up a little this spring and summer events begin."
The Valentine cash mob is being organized and sponsored by iloveriverhead, RiverheadLocal.com, and the Riverhead Business Improvement District, with support from the Town of Riverhead and many organizations and individuals committed to continuing to improve downtown Riverhead.
Part civic group and part marketing campaign, "iloveriverhead" has promoted the improvement of downtown Riverhead through multi-media communications, meetings, and events since 2009.
