, the not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, is looking for service couples that recently got engaged. Each year, since 2011, they have sponsored a Veterans Day Wedding Giveback where lucky one service couple is selected from a pool of applicants to receive the "wedding of their dreams" at Brecknock Hall in Greenport. The tradition started as a way to give back to veterans and recognize Long Island military personnel for their service.
The contest is open to current and veteran service members, and at least one partner must have served or be currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. To enter, applicants can visit www.brecknockhall.com
. The application deadline
is Friday, April 20, 2018. Couples who have entered in the past are able and encouraged to re-enter.
The winning couple is chosen by a panel of Peconic Landing's veteran members who judge the contest based on the number of years served, any special military honors, contributions to the community, and the couple's unique love story. Couples must also be available for an in-person or Skype interview if they would like to remain in consideration.
Last year's winning couple was U.S. Navy Lt. junior grade John Dunne, a Southold native, and his wife, Katie.
"We are so incredibly blessed to have been given this opportunity," said Lt. Dunne. "It was a beautiful, elegant, and picture perfect wedding. The generosity and compassion of every single vendor and volunteer was unparalleled, and we cannot ever thank them enough. The wedding exceeded our wildest dreams and was truly an incredible experience."
"The day meant so many things to me. The start of a family, a celebration of love, and the act of appreciation for my husband's service to our country. It was the perfect beginning to our lives together," said Katie Dunne.
This year's wedding is scheduled for Sunday, November 11 and can host up to 80 guests. It is made possible with the generosity and commitment of local business, volunteers, and sponsorships, which Peconic Landing estimates to be $60,000. Organizations and individuals donate money, time, and various services to bring the wedding day to fruition.
"Announcing the winners of this giveback is a highlight event for our veteran members and for the entire community," said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. "Every year we are more and more impressed with the applications we receive from individuals serving our country near and far. We want to thank all of our business partners who help make this giveback possible. It is an incredible community project, and many of them donate their services year after year."
