May Mile & 5K Race on Saturday, May 10, will benefit the Greenport Fire Department. The annual race will be held at Peconic Landing in Greenport. This event has become the East End's leading inter-generation celebration for Older Americans Month and welcomes runners and walkers of all ages and abilities.

Race registration and stretching will begin at Brecknock Hall (1 Brecknock Road, Greenport), at 8 a.m. The race and walk are set to start at 10 a.m., followed by the awards ceremonies at 11:15 a.m., and a barbeque after. Although pre-registration is suggested, race/May Mile registration or barbeque lunch/ceremony-only tickets can be purchased on the day of.
This year, the "Older American Champion Award" will be presented to Father Thomas Murray, pastor of Greenport's St. Agnes Church since 2002. The annual award honors a Long Island or local individual for his or her years of service and continued commitment to older Americans, recognizing the difference that person makes in older Americans' quality of life.

More than $160,000 has been raised for the Greenport Fire Department since the Peconic Landing May Mile & 5K Race began in 2005. Thanks to more than 70 monetary, in-kind and raffle sponsors, over 500 participants and the hard work of several volunteers, last year's May Mile & 5K alone raised $24,250, which was used to purchase necessary safety equipment.
