North Fork Community Theatre's 60th anniversary season will continue with
Next to Normal.
"Winner of three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, this ground-breaking show is an emotional powerhouse about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other," shared Director Jessica Raven.
The 2008 musical, with book and lyrics by
Brian Yorkey and music by
Tom Kitt, takes a look at how one seemingly "normal" suburban household deals with crisis and mental illness. While from the outside this family appears ordinary, when you scratch beyond the surface their lives are anything but. The family's matriarch struggles with bipolar disorder, which is getting worse, and the play explores the impact that her illness has on her loved ones.
"Driven by a rock and roll score,
Next to Normal is an intense, emotional, and ultimately hopeful evening of theatre that is rarely performed locally," she noted.
Emertainment Monthly deemed the soundtrack the Top Ten Original Broadway Musical Soundtracks. "The songs effortlessly blend together and tell a complete and moving story," said Nora Dominick.
