- Dr. Alexis Gersten
, of East Quogue, has been chosen by the American Dental Association to attend the Evidence Based Dentistry Conference at The ADA Headquarters in Chicago
, Illinois. Only 100 applicants were selected to participate in the prestigious conference. The conference is open to dentists with leadership skills from practice, academic and public health backgrounds who are interested in promoting evidence based dentistry to their dental and medical colleagues, peers and decision-makers.
The goal is for the participants is to become EBD Champions and serve as resources to their local dental communities by promoting an evidence-based approach to patient treatment and disease prevention. The ADA created the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry to connect the latest research findings with the daily practice of dentistry. Established in 2007, the Center develops resources to help dentists integrate clinically relevant scientific evidence at the point of care. The Center facilitates access to the best available scientific information related to oral health care, and develops evidence-based resources for use in clinical practice.
Dr. Gersten became interested in evidence-based dentistry when she was in dental school. She worked during her school breaks for the Department of Medical Informatics at the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Dental Medicine. The department focused on clinical health information systems, computerized decision-making and evaluation of computerized patient care. Dr. Gersten realized that there was a wealth of knowledge around the world that dentists and physicians could share with each other, all available at their finger tips. Her job at the time was to create an indexing system for the newly computerized curriculum at SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.
She worked with an orthodontist in Capetown, South Africa on the project. "Because of the time difference we often left each other 'stickies' about the work we doing. It was very inspiring to know that two people so far apart could get so much done together. It really showed me that a medical professional could consult with anyone in world. I realized what a great benefit this was to patients." But, as Dr. Gersten points out, one of the important themes of evidence based dentistry and evidence based medicine is the quality of the information that professionals rely on to make decisions for their patients. As the world has grown smaller through the use of the internet and the availability of medical information has increased rapidly, so has the need for medical professionals to be able to systematically review this information to help make treatment decisions for their patients.
After earning her DDS in Buffalo, Dr. Gersten completed a course of post-graduate work at St. Charles Hospital
in Post Jefferson, New York. She is now in private practice in Speonk, New York at Beach Dental. Dr. Gersten is honored to have been chosen to attend the Evidence Based Dentistry Conference and is looking forward to spending time with her colleagues at the ADA Headquarters. When she returns from her studies at the conference she will bring with her the cutting edge information that the Evidence Based Dentistry Conference is known for, and she looks forward to sharing this with her dental and medical colleagues, her patients and her team at Beach Dental.
