- The East End Veterans Affairs Clinic at the Riverhead County Center is set to open May 2, 2011 announced Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine
, who spearheaded the effort to establish a veterans health facility on the East End.
This new 4,300 square foot state-of-the-art community clinic, operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, will provide physical and mental health services and reduce, and in some cases eliminate, the need for eastern Suffolk's veterans to travel to Northport for care. Initially appointments will be required, but the VA hopes to accommodate walk-in patients as well.
The new clinic will operate five to six days a week and consists of six exam rooms, two counseling rooms, administrative space to process paperwork, and a spacious lobby. It is located in the Evans K. Griffing County Center, 300 Center Drive, Riverhead, and has dedicated parking and a private elevator. Those using the clinic will not need to pass through the building's traditional security checkpoint. A shuttle van will also be available for those who require transportation.
"I have eagerly awaited the opening of the East End Veterans Clinic," said Legislator Romaine. "We owe it to our veterans to provide a top-notch health facility on the East End and I am confident this facility will be one of the premiere medical facilities on eastern Long Island."
The facility will start seeing mental health patients on May 2 and primary care patients on May 4. A formal ribbon cutting by the VA has not yet been scheduled.
