Southampton - With the completion of the second half of its Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center, Southampton Hospital has taken steps to significantly enhance the childbirth experience for parents and families throughout the East End of Long Island.

The additional 8,307 square feet encompasses four private labor-and-delivery suites, each fully-appointed with state-of-the-art labor and infant monitoring technology, private bathrooms and showers. Most importantly, a new operating suite dedicated to Cesarean sections and a recovery area are included in the new layout. Previously, mothers requiring a Cesarean section had to be transported to an operating room on the Hospital's first floor. The Hospital's focus on patient safety and quality care is evident throughout the Center. Emphasis was also placed on creating a welcoming and supportive environment, so many other amenities for physicians, nurses and maternity staff are also provided, enhancing the experience of childbirth for professionals as well as parents and families.

"The addition of this new section to the Maternity Center completes a facility that measures up to the medical excellence our staff provides," comments Robert Chaloner, Hospital President and CEO adding, "It has been designed to combine high-tech capabilities with the comforts and ambiance of a home-like setting."

This opening comes on the heels of a recent award from HealthGrades, the nation's leading independent auditor of hospitals, who has recognized Southampton Hospital for being in the top five percent of hospitals nationally for patient safety.

A number of informative classes are offered at the Kathleen D. Allen Maternity Center, including Lamaze childbirth, Baby Care Basics, Infant CPR, breast feeding, and an orientation for siblings. In addition, pre-admission tours are available for expectant parents. For information or to arrange a tour, call the Nurse Manager at 631-726-8633.
