- East Hampton and New York "dentist to the stars" Dr. Gerry Curatola
will be featured on "The Dr. Oz
Show" on Monday, April 19, 2010 (Fox 5, 10am) as Oral Health Expert for a segment detailing "5 Tests That Can Save A Woman's Life." Dr. Curatola will introduce a new device called the Identifi 3000 Ultra for the Early Detection of Oral Cancer. Dr. Curatola is the only cosmetic dentist on the East End utilizing this breakthrough science.
The device, which uses a multi-spectral technology with three light wavelengths, enables dentists and dental hygienists to observe a deadly cancerous lesion in the mouth before it is visible to the naked eye. "Oral cancer kills one person every hour, every day. It is more deadly than breast cancer, cervical, prostate, liver or colon cancers," explains Dr. Curatola. With this early detection, the survivability rate is raised to nearly 90 percent from as low as 35 percent.
Dr. Curatola, a New York University Clinical Associate Professor and Board Trustee at Ross School in East Hampton, will discuss the growing trend of Oral Cancer striking younger patients due to the prevalence of HPV (human papilloma virus) infection, the same virus responsible for the majority of cervical cancers, spread to the mouth through oral sex. Adds Dr. Curatola, "Most people are unaware that this is truly a cancer you can catch." He stresses the importance of education to young people in schools and recommends early cancer detection screening for everyone over the age of 17.
