Southampton - I so often get asked by friends living in the city for advice on what to wear, where to go and what to do in the Hamptons sometimes I feel like I'm running a personal concierge service. In thinking about my column this week, I decided to recount a typical back and forth that commonly occurs on Thursdays and Fridays. What follows is one such conversation between myself and a dear friend in the financial industry who is renting a share house in East Hampton this summer.

bodybybanking1062: hey man... coming out this weekend... will you be out East?

hamptonswriter: indeed... I'm always here, why does everyone always ask me that? you know I live here.

hamptonswriter: what's up?

bodybybanking: saw some of your articles, see you're the big style guy now... so i have a question:

White pants: not just for polo players and swarthy Europeans, keep it casual.

bodybybanking1062: should i wear my white jeans this weekend? or are polo players the only men allowed to wear white jeans?

hamptonswriter: white jeans... unless you're pairing it with a 'Frankie Says Relax' tee-shirt and a sense of irony... or unless you are a beautiful girl... I'd leave 'em at home. Besides, polo season hasn't even started

hamptonswriter: now white linen pants are another story

bodybybanking1062: i always get the creeps when i see white linen pants... probably because they're paired with a bright pastel button down and excessive chest hair. are you actually saying that look is acceptable? i'm beginning to doubt your advice. try and redeem yourself here...

hamptonswriter: agreed, sometimes white linen pants have a bit of that swarthy European feel, but as long as you tone it down, i.e., rather than a bright linen pastel shirt, wear a dark or neutral colored tee-shirt, it's a much less aggressive look... besides have you ever actually worn linen pants on a hot day? it's delightful

hamptonswriter: and no drawsting on the pants either... wayyyy too euro

bodybybanking1062: that begs the question: what color belt?

hamptonswriter: btw saw steph and some of the girls at talkhouse this weekend... good times, good band...

hamptonswriter: no belt just use a chiffon scarf....

hamptonswriter: kidding

hamptonswriter: i've been seeing a lot of those "punk" belts out here... it seems to be like the new hipster thing... like the leather ones with the metal grommets in them or the studs... not sure how that would work with linen

bodybybanking1062: metro punk

hamptonswriter: yeah...

hamptonswriter: no belt.. no socks... it's summer for chris'sakes

bodybybanking1062: yeah, but will that look get me in the door at the AXE lounge?

hamptonswriter: are you on the list? did you chat up those PR girls I told you to contact?

hamptonswriter: if not, then maybe you could improve your chances by dousing yourself in gallons of body spray...

hamptonswriter: maybe if you're tee-shirt was really edgy... I saw a picture of a guy there wearing white linen and a black shirt with big white letters a la the "Frankie Says Relax" but this shirt said "I'm In Miami B---!

bodybybanking1062: will they nag me at the door if i'm wearing drakar noir?

hamptonswriter: hahahaha

hamptonswriter: yes

hamptonswriter: surf lodge has been pretty happening ... Stephen Marley was there Sunday, and those Montauk storms are incredible... i can't believe more places don't rock the dark n' stormy...

bodybybanking1062: THAT's a story you should do. make the case for the dark and stormy

hamptonswriter: it's pretty much just the perfect summer beverage

Dark N' Stormys are quite possibly the quintessential summer drink. Two parts dark rum (Goslings is best) and top it off with ginger beer.

hamptonswriter: yes! They always remind me of the Swizzle Inn in Bermuda... you know what their motto is?

bodybybanking1062: ?

hamptonswriter: Swizzle Inn... Swagger Out

bodybybanking1062: nice

hamptonswriter: it's the kind of bold faced sailing bravado I think we could use more of... perhaps this summer needs to be approached with more of a pirate mentality and plenty of dark rum and ginger beer...

bodybybanking1062: pirates are big these days

hamptonswriter: you think? Haven't seen much skull and crossbone garb yet this season... save maybe one or two pairs of stubbs & wootens on Memorial Day weekend

hamptonswriter: i'm down with the buccaneer lifestyle

bodybybanking1062: i was thinking like real pirates

hamptonswriter: oh

hamptonswriter: hmmm.. not as fun though... kind of serious... you mean like if the locals banded together and start raiding some of the mega yachts in Sag Harbor?

hamptonswriter: anyway...

bodybybanking1062: yeah, anyway

hamptonswriter: when you getting out here?

bodybybanking1062: half day on Friday... taking the cannonball...

hamptonswriter: you banking guys and your half days...

bodybybanking1062: you damn Hamptons writers and your cars and supermodel parties...

hamtonswriter: right... need a ride to your place from the East Hampton station? I can probably pick you up...

bodybybanking1062: totally. bringing the girls out. A little barbecue in exchange for the pick up ?

hamtonswriter: done and done... tina still dating that old hedge fund guy?

bodybybanking1062: nope... why?

hamptonswriter: no reason.. see you at 7 in EH then?

bodybybanking1062: yup, see you then
