Sixty-Something: The Five Most Romantic Outdoor Locations In The Hamptons

T.J. Clemente

Some outdoor locations are just very romantic. They have an overwhelming power and beauty that when shared with the right certain other propels a magic feeling of connection to happen. Here are the five that I believe are the most romantic places in the Hamptons to feel that connection and to perhaps also star gaze, or catch the last colors of a powerful sunset.

Gerard Drive, in the Springs, hugs the shore of both Gardiner's Bay and Acabonac Harbor. In spots, such as the small bridge, the road is the only land between those two bodies of water. At night the power of both bodies of water, along with the sounds of the birds, all under a very clear big open space sky of stars is as romantic as romantic gets. If you haven't walked there after dark you truly must get there.

Everyone who has ever lived in Montauk understands how romantic the bluffs of Camp Hero are in the evening. The view of the iconic Montauk Lighthouse surrounded by bluffs and beach under a carpet of stars is surreal as the lighthouse's strobe light passes by every thirty seconds or so. I used to walked my dog there late at night and brought the woman who is now my wife there on her first night visiting me in Montauk.

Conscience Point in North Sea (Southampton) is a historic spot all should visit. It is where the settlers of 1640 landed and came ashore. It is also an amazingly romantic spot in the evening. As the short trail (200 yards) to the Conscience Point is surrounded by North Sea Harbor looking out at Davis Creek that opens into Peconic Bay. Again the star gazing sky and the quietness with an often stillness makes this place so romantic. Bring a flashlight for the very short open trail-walk to the point.

Cedar Island Light House on Cedar Point is yet another romantic spot in the Hamptons. It has not been an actual Cedar Island since the Hurricane of 1938. Of all on this list this is the most difficult location to get to (only by foot or boat) and thus the most secluded at night. The western exposure ensures wonderful nightly sunsets. The narrow neck of water that separates Gardiner's Bay from North West Harbor has a flashing green light tower at night that adds to the atmosphere. However while standing on the porch of the abandoned non-functioning lighthouse the view of the stars along with Shelter Island, Orient Point, Gardiner's Island, Clearwater Beach in East Hampton, along with the view southwest of Sag Harbor is quite spectacular!

What I believe is the most romantic spot in all the Hamptons at night is on Shelter Island on Ram Island Drive just before the road goes uphill to the famous Rams Head Inn. The narrow stretch of road that separates Gardiner's Bay (with a great view of Bug Lighthouse) and the beautiful Coecles Harbor is one those magic roads in the Hamptons. Pulling off the road and walking down the beaches located on either side of the road with a dark sky lit by billions of stars and with your special one is what defines a romantic location. It's special; if you haven't done it at night I recommend that you do.

I believe love is a vein of energy that flows in the air like a river and when you fall into that river you feel the power of a billion suns.

I know these five locations are great romantic places to experience all that power.
