Teeny Awards Announced At Gala Ceremony At Riverhead High School

Riverhead - The Eighth Annual Teeny Awards were presented Sunday, June 6 during a gala ceremony at Riverhead High School. Nominees, decked out in their formal attire, walked the Red Carpet and were filmed for a Verizon Fios One television special.

The Teeny Awards is a student theatre arts recognition program developed by the East End Arts Council and the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center patterned after the Tony Awards. It is now run entirely by the East End Arts Council. Volunteer judges attend high school plays and select nominees in each of a variety of categories, culminating in this gala awards ceremony in June.

David Brandenburg, Artistic Director of the Hamptons Shakespeare Festival, served as Master of Ceremonies for a second year, and honored guests and sponsors presenting awards included Marion Stark, Bridgehampton National Bank (sponsor); Will Chandler, Program Coordinator, Stony Brook Southampton's Young American Writers Project; Tracy Mitchell and Murphy Davis, Bay Street Theatre; Michael Disher, Southampton Cultural Center Theatre Director, Joanna Ferraro-Levy, Associate Director, WHB Performing Arts Center; Denise Donovan, Human Resources Executive Team Leader, Target; Mary Ann Martorano, Sponsor; Greg McCaslin, Education Director of Roundabout Theatre Company; Cathy Moriarty, Actor, Oscar Nominee; Sandra Novick, President, East End Arts Council; J. Gordon Huszagh, President and CEO of Suffolk County National Bank (sponsor); Fred Thiele, NYS Assemblyman; Kenneth LaValle, NYS Senator; Andrew Botsford, Hampton Theatre Company; Cindy Clifford, WALK Breakfast Club; Sean O'Hara, Director of Fine Arts at Riverhead High School. Former Teeny winners from past years included Riverhead graduates Erin McKenna, Colin Palmer and Christina Peters, and Shelter Island graduate Kirby Garrison.

Each nominee was presented individually to the audience as they filed into the spotlight onstage one at a time to thunderous applause. Each winner received a glass trophy and $200 scholarship.

The audience was treated to scenes from this past year's productions: Judges Choice winners, the Barbershop Quartet from Westhampton Beach High School's production of "Music Man," Southold High School's "Oliver!," Riverhead High School's "Fame," and East Hampton High School's "Beauty and the Beast."

Four winners were selected to receive a $2,000 Theatre Scholarship from Five Towns College.

JUDGES' CHOICE AWARD
This award is chosen by the judges in a vote. It is for a particular scene, musical number, dance number, ensemble effort, or group that the judges feel stands out enough to warrant the special merit. This year, the recipient of the Judges' Choice Award is the Barbershop Quartet from "The Music Man" by Westhampton Beach High School, comprised of Kyle Higgins, Aidan Marsicovetere, Luke Nilsson, and Christian Thienel.
