On Christmas Eve, philanthropist and Flanders resident Dhonna Goodale
along with her family helped spread holiday cheer with a shopping spree at Kmart in Riverhead. Twenty-two children from the Riverhead area chose head to toe outfits, toys of their choice and their parents were taken food shopping. During shopping they were assisted by elves and Santa's helpers and the children were even surprised with a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Goodale who was recently seen on the TLC
reality show "Four Houses
: Deck the Halls", showing off her holiday decorating talents, has been dedicated to others throughout her adulthood. She is now passing along the tradition with her husband two their two sons, Jesse and Jared, who joined in on the holiday gift-giving. Goodale said, "We were taught to serve others. Earlier in life I was that kid, the one who went without and I am living proof that with perseverance you can go from welfare to philanthropy. The thought behind this activity is that when much is given, much is expected and the reason for the season is that a child was born and died for us."
This isn't the only charitable act Goodale is involved in. Through Goodale Productions, her family helps supports safe houses for battered women and their children in memory of her sister, Tara L. Stevens, who was murdered in 2003 by an abusive husband. Through The Ecumenical Missionaries, the Goodales help provide prenatal care, parenting skills and supplies to unwed mothers and aid to the children of prostitutes. They also currently support approximately 80 college students with scholarships, book stipends and/or clothing grants.
