Bridgehampton School student Maxwell Gomberg and his team took home top honors for Level 2 of the 6th Annual 2021 Code-A-Thon, presented by We Connect The Dots. The three-day program was held Friday, January 29 through Sunday, January 31.

"We are so excited about our partnership with We Connect The Dots. STEAM education is the wave of the future for everyone," Bonnie Michelle Cannon, Executive Director, Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center, shared. "It is time we start preparing our kids to compete equally in school and in the workplace."

Code-A-Thon participants worked as a team to create a conceptual business that champions the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. The students were tasked with integrating technology and developing a website that offered a solution to a challenge our society is facing.

"One of the most important things about competing in the Code-A-Thon was that it was not only about coding," Cannon said. "It challenged the students to use critical thinking and come up with Global Solutions."

Students were taught how to utilize Microsoft Teams as a part of the digital event. Since Gomberg was a part of the Level 2 program, he learned to code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as explored how to use industry platforms to build websites.

"I could not be any more proud of Maxwell and his team's presentation!" she relayed about the longtime Center after-school program attendee.

We Connect The Dots, a not-for-profit whose goal is to inspire and enlighten students about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) careers, holds the yearly program to challenge students to go beyond their comfort zones, learn new skills while having fun, collaborate with others, share information, and find solutions to difficult problems. Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreational Center partnered with We Connect the Dots on the Center's Teach me How to Fish Workforce Training Program, an inclusive Software Engineering Bootcamp. There are currently four students in the program, and the Center will launch another class in April.

"We welcome and encourage more students to participate next year," Cannon added.
