What are the chances? A cyclist hit by a van must have had his guardian angels watching over. Joy Pak RN, CNOR, was on her way to the Hudson River Health Care Center in Southampton, which she oversees as Director, when she saw him lying in the middle of the road. Joy is a St. Vincent's nurse, trained in Ireland by the same Sisters of Charity order that founded New York City
's Greenwich Village facility. "I'm a certified trained operating room nurse, which means I can spring into action in the middle of the night," she told us. But, in twenty years of nursing, she has been the first on the scene of an accident only twice before. She pulled over, donned her gloves and N95 mask and assessed. He was in pain, but conscious and coherent, with orthopedic injuries. She advised him to stay still until the medics arrived. Then, she texted her husband!
"The funny part of it was," said Joy, "when he ended up in the hospital, Sang was the General Surgeon on call." That would be her husband, Sang Pak, the surgeon who was getting an alert from the hospital at the same time.
And that's a Hamptons' Two Pak treatment!
The man's major injury? A broken upper arm bone, known as a humerus shaft fracture. Which is not humorous at all.
