The Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation (MPCCF) is inviting the community to “Get Wet for a Good Cause” at the 12th Annual Montauk Swim Challenge, taking place from Saturday, August 15 through Saturday, August 22, 2020. Lauren Maldonado, the Playhouse Foundation Administrator, was kind enough to spend some time explaining what’s happening next in Montauk. Maldonado, who was born and raised in Montauk, is very happy about the way this year’s Challenge is taking shape in a way, “That will allow more people to participate, no matter the weather, or where they are.”
Maldonado explained that due to the Coronavirus pandemic, this year The Challenge will be a virtual online event via the Elite Feats athletic event platform. She relayed, “This year, the Montauk Swim Challenge features three distance categories for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Beginners can sign up for a half-mile swim, more experienced swimmers can register for the one-mile swim, and the adventurous can tackle the 5K swim. Participants will seek personal sponsors for their swim, swim their chosen distance, and log their results online. Swimmers will choose their own location to complete their swim (pool, ocean, bay, lake, etc.).”
“We’re thrilled to continue the tradition of the Montauk Swim Challenge this summer as a virtual event,” stated Julia McCormack, Development Director of the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation, in a press release. “This annual fundraiser for the Playhouse Foundation is a wonderful way for us to continue to move forward in our mission to raise funds to construct an Aquatic Center at the Montauk Playhouse. We invite the entire community to participate—this is an especially fun summer activity for kids and families!”
Maldonado explained, “We are hoping to raise our goal of $10,000 this year.”
Participants will register in advance on elitefeats.com. The registration fee is $40 and after registering, participants will receive a confirmation and complete race instructions via email. Complete race results will be posted online at elitefeats.com. Participants will receive a commemorative 2020 Montauk Swim Challenge T-Shirt. The last day to register and post result times online is August 22.
Proceeds from the Montauk Swim Challenge will benefit construction of the future Aquatic Center at the Montauk Playhouse Community Center. For more information: call (631) 668-1124 or visit montaukplayhouse.org.
