Some may think that because winter has arrived the risk for ticks is gone, but that's not the case.

"It's crucial to continue taking preventative measures and checking for ticks because they are still active and in search of a blood meal whenever temperatures exceed 32 degrees Fahrenheit," Brian Kelly, tick control expert and owner of East End Tick & Mosquito Control, relayed.

If the temperature is above freezing, that means that ticks are active and search for blood. Even in the colder months, ticks are to detect the carbon dioxide that is being released from the warm-blooded animals and humans.

Once a tick feeds on a host, female adults lay their eggs underneath leaf litter. Those eggs hatch in the spring and summer months, leading to a new tick population. To address this concern, East End Tick & Mosquito has launched a new granular winter tick treatment, Tick Shield.

"Last winter, every day exceeded 35 degrees Fahrenheit and we imagine there will be plenty of warm days this winter too, and prevention is always better than a cure," said Kelly.

Tick Shield applications occur between the months of December through March.
