Hamptons-Based Espresso Bar & Café Company Utilizing Innovative And Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment System

Hampton Coffee Company in Water Mill is the first company on the East End to upgrade its septic system to a new nitrogen-reducing Innovative and Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (I/A OWTS). Utilizing environmentally friendly practices has always been important to Hampton Coffee Company, who is now the inaugural East End business to upgrade its septic system to a new nitrogen-reducing Innovative and Alternative Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (I/A OWTS). Through a grant being offered by the Town of Southampton and a loan from BNB Bank, the Southampton-based local espresso bar & café company was able to make the upgrade at its 24-year-old flagship location on Montauk Highway in Water Mill.

"All of us at Hampton Coffee live in this community so the environment around us is not only important to us as a company, but personally as well," reflected company co-owner Jason Belkin. "We already made the switch to paper straws in response to our staff and guests' concerns and we've been recycling for years. This is amazing that now we are turning our wastewater into basically the quality of water that comes from your backyard hose. We're really proud to be making this difference."

In addition to getting rid of plastic straws, all Hampton Coffee Company locations - Water Mill, Southampton, Westhampton Beach and Aquebogue - are Green Cafés that utilize single stream recycling, as well as LED lighting, and several reusable cups and tumblers are available for purchase - with discounts offered when they are brought back. And, not only does the Water Mill location boast the I/A OWTS, it also has solar panels and a monitor inside the café so patrons can actually view a demonstration of the electric being created in real time. The Southampton coffee roastery ships mail orders Carbon Neutral with UPS, its java jackets are printed on compostable paperboard utilizing vegetable inks, and Single Cups are produced in bio-degradable packaging.

The I/A OWTS system that Hampton Coffee Company selected is the state-of-the-art Singulair system by Ohio-based Norweco, which is a system that Suffolk County has approved. The system uses only half of the energy of other systems, as it is activated only 30-minutes every hour. Perry DeLalio of SFA DeLalio based in Southampton served as the project's site contractor, while Precision Excavation from Quogue and Gene Berry was the septic installer.
