The first Fridays on the Porch of 2018 will revolve around one of the most notable tunes tied to baseball.

The Sag Harbor Historical Society will present Take Me Out to the Ball Game: The Story of Katie Casey, Suffrage and Our National Pastime on Friday, July 6 at 5 p.m. at the Annie Cooper Boyd House.

"Our Friday on the Porch series is not only fun but it is also informative-and a great time to get together with our friends, neighbors and visitors alike. It's also a great opportunity to come on down and visit this year's exhibit," said Nancy Remkus of the Sag Harbor Historical Society.

The musical lecture and presentation will discuss the iconic song and the surprising story of the song's fictional character, Katie Casey. The cheerful song is known far and wide by baseball fans but has a larger context than the upbeat lyrics suggest.

In 1908, as women began emerging into the public sphere and exploring equal rights, the song endorsed that a woman could be seen and should be seen enjoying the American pastime.

The presentation will feature a selection of multimedia documentary materials relating to women, baseball and suffrage to bring lights to the beloved jingle.

The presenter will be George Boziwick, a retired chief of the Music Division at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Combining his passions for music and baseball, he has presented lectures and performances on Take Me Out to the Ball Game at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

"I wonder sometimes if people realize how important it is to support their local historical societies," Remkus added. "The trustees of the Sag Harbor Historical Society work hard to keep the history of Sag Harbor alive- and maintain the historic significance of this beautiful village. We can't do it without the support of our community attending events and signing up for annual memberships (only $25)."

A tax deductible donation of $20 to the Historical Society for admission will include complimentary wine, beer, peanuts, cracker jacks and other snacks as well as free baseball cards.

"This house is filled with historic treasures and open to the public. So many people walk by and have never stepped into this historic beauty," Remkus said. "Come on down-join us for this wonderful community event!"

The Annie Cooper Boyd House is located at 174 Main Street in Sag Harbor. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit sagharborhistorical.org or call 631-725-5092.
