Annual Spring 5K Benefit In Sag Harbor Taking Place This Weekend

Nicole Barylski

Sick and tired of being cooped up in the house because of Mother Nature's unpredictable spring storms? On Saturday, April 21 bask in the outdoors during the eighth annual Katy's Courage 5K.

"It's the day we look forward to each year, the 8th annual Katy's Courage 5K!" Brigid Collins, Katy's Courage co-founder, reflected. "The race is always such a wonderful spring community event, and after being inside all winter, it's nice to get out and see all our supporters, friends and families in attendance!"

Registration and check-ins will take place from 7 to 8:15 a.m., with a prompt 8:30 a.m. start at 21 West Water Street in Sag Harbor. The 5K will take walkers and runners north, where they will make a right onto Main Street, another right onto Glover Street, journey through the Redwood section of the course and head back to Water Street where the race ends. Participants can expect a course that's mostly flat with a few small, gentle hills.

Founded in 2012 in honor of Katy Stewart, who passed away at 12-years-old from a rare form of pediatric liver cancer, the not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization is committed to supporting pediatric cancer research, education, and children's bereavement counseling.

"We deeply appreciate all the camaraderie shown for a cause close to our hearts that honors the memory of our little girl, Katy," Collins reflected. "The funds raised go toward sustaining Katy's Courage, a local East End not-for-profit that contributes all proceeds each year to continue our work."

Proceeds from the eighth annual Katy's Courage 5K will support local scholarships and Katy's Kids @ CMEE.

"We service a local program for grieving children and their families, Katy's Kids @ CMEE, at the Children's Museum of the East End; we continue to support pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan (most recently making a contribution in support of an initiative there designed to help fund a DNA sequencer and the genomic profiling it drives, helping patients get the earliest and most precise treatment possible), and every year, we provide scholarships for Pierson and East Hampton High School seniors on their way to college," Collins explained. "Each of these initiatives is in need of dollars to positively affect our community, and we continue to see first-hand the way in which they make a wonderful difference for the children and families who receive assistance from them."

The entry fee is $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the race.

"We look forward to seeing every one at the race!" Collins added.
