Harborfrost – the winter celebration in Sag Harbor – will take place on Saturday, February 24. Beginning at 1 p.m., there will be a variety of events, demonstrations, and activities for adults, children, and families that highlight two elements: fire and ice. The festival runs until 6 p.m. and features live music, promotions and special deals offered by local businesses, and a “culinary stroll” put together by participating restaurants.
The event is presented by the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “Shop local, support your community, and enjoy the celebrations throughout the day,” said Lisa Field, President of the Sag Harbor Chamber of Commerce. “Spend the day shopping and dining in beautiful Sag Harbor, we are open for business – even in the dead of winter.”
There will be nautical-themed ice sculptures lining Main Street and Bay Street and, for those interested in the skill, a live ice carving demonstration on Long Wharf at 2 p.m. by Ice Melodies. At the same time, Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance will host the “Frosty Plunge” at Windmill Beach. The event will support the organization and for those too cold-averse to jump into the freezing waters, donations are also an acceptable form of support. One can sign up for the plunge an hour prior in the Windmill.
Anna and Elsa of Frozen will be stationed at the Sag Harbor Variety Store for a meet and greet at 2:30 p.m. and throughout the day, there will be other children’s activities indoors at Dodds and Eder. The culinary stroll, hosted by the Sag Harbor Hysterical Society, is $50 per person and will allow participants to sample food from participating eateries. Sign-up begins at noon at Il Cappuccino.
To highlight the element of fire, there will be fire jugglers and dancers, and fireworks to close out the festival at 6:15 p.m. Fiery Sensations will perform on Long Wharf just prior to the fireworks show by Grucci – a fireworks manufacturer that has put on shows worldwide and, more recently, set a world record in January during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah.
Finally, as part of Harborfrost weekend, Bay Street Theater will have an All Star Stand Up Comedy show on Friday evening at 8 p.m. The show features talents such as Joseph Vecsey, PJ Landers, Rosebud Baker, and Tanael Joachim.
“It’s an incredible line up,” says Joseph Vecey. “HarborFrost Weekend usually ends up being one of our best shows. I think the crowds are just happy to be laughing inside a heated building in February.”
