Don’t be surprised if you see a sea of pink this weekend in Shelter Island.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means it’s the perfect time to lace up your sneakers and support two local organizations during the 16th Annual Shelter Island Fall 5K Run and 5K Walk on Saturday, October 17th.
The 3.1 mile run/walk supports breast health, with all proceeds benefiting patient care through the North Fork Breast Health Coalition and the Coalition for Women’s Breast Health at Southampton Hospital. All raffle proceeds will benefit Lucia’s Angels.
The Shelter Island Fall 5k Run/Walk begins at Crescent Beach (35 Shore Road, Shelter Island Heights) at 11 a.m., rain or shine. The top finishers and the first place breast cancer survivor runner and walker will be awarded with a medal, while the team with the most participants and the top two pledge winners will receive a prize.
A free shuttle bus will transport participants from the North Ferry to the staging area between 9 and 10:15 a.m. and back to the North Ferry until 1 p.m. Before the race, runners and walkers can get limber during a free stretch clinic at 10 a.m. A complimentary barbecue, sponsored by the Lions Club, will be held following the race.
The entry fee is $30 per person for advance registration (prior to Thursday, October 15th) and $40 per person after. Admission is $10 per person for kids 14 and under.
