Traveling to the Hamptons via Long Island Rail Road’s Cannonball train this weekend? Make sure to carefully edit what you’re packing.
After the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) expressed its concern over the packed Cannonball cars and baggage stored in the aisles, the LIRR is advising passengers to leave their oversized luggage at home, “to help ensure a safe and comfortable ride.” FRA is concerned that the blocked aisles could be a problem in the case of an emergency evacuation.
The Cannonball has become extremely popular with travelers due to its speed and convenience. The LIRR train operates nonstop from Penn Station to the Hamptons and reserved seating is available in the first two cars.
“We certainly hope that everyone who wants to board the Cannonball can do so,” said LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski. “If our customers leave oversized items at home, more of them will be able to enjoy a ride to the Hamptons in under two hours. We need everyone’s cooperation to make this work.”
The LIRR noted along with overhead and under seat storage, it will designate some storage areas on the train for addition luggage, and that luggage will not be permitted in aisles or doorways.
