East Hampton Library Pays Tribute To Former Board Chair With New Conversation Series

On Saturday, April 18th, the East Hampton Library is debuting "The Tom Twomey Series: Conversations With…," in honor of Tom Twomey, the Library's Board Chairman who passed away in November. The series of twelve late Saturday afternoon lectures in the Library's new Baldwin Family Lecture Room will feature noted experts. Each week will cover a different topic, ranging from the future of professional sports to local history to health to the environment to North Korea to the pop songs of World War I.

"The idea for these programs came from Tom, and this was his last wish for the Library," noted Donald L. Hunting, President of the Library's Board of Managers. "We are so pleased to fulfill his vision and honor the memory of his extraordinary leadership and dedication to the Library with the launch of this remarkable new series."

The series will kickoff on Saturday, April 18th with the "Dedication of The Tom Twomey Gallery." The inaugural happening will feature the tribute of the Library Gallery, adjoining the Baldwin Family Lecture Room, in memory of Twomey and the compilation of local history books he bestowed to the Library. The afternoon will also feature the launch the last volume of the East Hampton Historical Collection book series, edited by Tom, and a discussion led by Gina Piastuck, head of the Library's Long Island Collection, about recent acquisitions.

The series continues on Saturday, April 25th with "Meeting Climate Change Challenges: A Coastal Community Perspective" featuring speaker Linda B. James, M.P.H and a panel of climate specialists. On Saturday, May 2nd, the topic is "The Interaction of Ticks and Our Immune System" with speaker George Dempsey, M.D. On Saturday, May 23rd, learn about "Over There: Greatest Hits of the Great War" with Brett Kroeger, Soprano and Christopher Denny, Piano. Saturday, June 13th takes a look at "The Political Biographer" with speakers Blanche Wiesen Cooke and Richard Reeves. On Saturday, June 20th hear about "From Natural Landscapes to Native Plants: A Passion for Nature at The New York Botanical Garden" with speaker Todd Forrest. Saturday, June 27th, shines a spotlight on "Saving Our Communities from Fiscal Crises" with speakers Richard Ravitch and Larry Cantwell.

July kicks off on Saturday, July 11th with "The U.S. Congress: Is the Branch Still Broken?" featuring speaker Former Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY). The series continues on Saturday, July 25th with "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About North Korea but Were Afraid to Ask" featuring speaker Robert Boynton. On Saturday, August 1st learn about "Update: The Strangling of a Resort" with speaker Paul Goldberger. Saturday, August 22nd features "A Farewell to Sport" with speaker Robert Lipsyte. The series will conclude on Saturday, September 19th with "The Tom Twomey Lecture in Local History" featuring Bruce Collins.
