The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Inc. (ARF) and the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) announced that it held a most successful feral cat spay day on July 17, 2014 in Mastic Beach. A team of volunteers from the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association and the Mastic Beach Feral Cat Spay & Neuter Program assisted the staff from ARF and SASF. Dr. Terri Meekins was the veterinarian on hand. A total of 59 cats were fixed which includes a spay/neuter surgery, vaccination against rabies and distemper and an ear tip. SASF provide the spay/neuter VAN where the surgeries were performed.
ARF’s Operation Cat Coordinator, Rita Del Rey stated “Dr. Meekins has to be the fastest vet on Long Island! To be able to neuter 23 male cats and 36 female cats in one day is unheard of!” Once the cats have recuperated overnight from their surgery, they are released back to the colony where they were trapped. This trap/neuter/return (TNR) is the proven, humane way to reduce feral cat colonies.
