“In the face of all that challenges our country, it gives me great confidence to know dedicated young Americans such as yourselves have taken the first step in responsible citizenship: an education,” said Congressman Tim Bishop during his commencement address at SUNY Maritime. “As the world becomes more interdependent and our economy increasingly competitive, the dedication you’ve shown to get to today reflects the seriousness with which you approach the challenges that lay before you and our country.”
During tough economic times, Congressman Bishop noted the significance of the maritime industry. “Unemployment remains a serious problem, and the number of long-term unemployed Americans remains distressingly high. In this context, the fact that your soon-to-be alma mater can proudly boast that its recent graduates have benefited from nearly 100 percent job placement within three months is remarkable.”
He also urged the graduates to take an active role in their communities. “The easiest place to be in this world is on the sidelines, and neither you nor your country can afford for you to be there.”
