The North Fork Animal Welfare League will hold its first annual "May Furry Valentine" event - which was originally supposed to take place in February but was postponed due to weather - at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead on Thursday, May 11 at 6 p.m. The evening will feature food, drinks, silent auctions, entertainment, a magician/comic, several surprises, and the chance to meet Aquarium residents.

All proceeds raised during "May Furry Valentine" will go towards funding the capital campaign to renovate the Henry Pfeifer Community Center in Riverhead into a new state-of-the-art animal shelter. The shelter will give homeless and lost dogs, cats, and other animals a temporary home in the Town of Riverhead.

"The mission of the League is to provide the best possible care for all animals needing protection in our community," said Gillian Pultz, Executive Director of the North Fork Animal Welfare League. "Please come celebrate with us and help provide a new, full service, humane animal shelter for the Town of Riverhead."

This project has been under the management of North Fork Animal Welfare League since early 2013. The current Riverhead Town Shelter is located in a decades old building that is in great disrepair. It's situated next to a garbage dump and waste processing plant. Even with the upgrades and repairs that the North Fork Animal Welfare League has made, the facility will never meet its standards for the animals or residents of the Town of Riverhead.

The new building will be a model shelter with an energy efficient design that is bright, airy and accommodating for the animals in the League's care as well as the surrounding community. The new shelter will also feature an indoor and outdoor area for dogs and cats. The shelter is designed for animal intake, family bonding, humane education, and storage. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of adoptions from this shelter and to help find dogs, cats, and other animals a forever loving home.

Tickets to "May Furry Valentine" are $75.

Long Island Aquarium is located at 431 East Main Street in Riverhead. For more information, call 631-765-1811 or visit nfawl.org.
