Did you miss your chance for a cameo with Ian Ziering and Tara Reid in "Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!?" That's okay because this summer, you can get up close and personal with the Disco Shark, an eight-foot mirror-plated fiberglass disco ball shark designed by New York-based artist Kevin McHugh. Located at The Club at Philippe
, the eye-catching artwork is part of a conservation campaign, which is raising money to protect and raise awareness for endangered species in the ocean, specifically sharks.
"Sharks get a bad rap," noted artist Kevin McHugh. "I created Disco Shark to change the notion of them as predators, as sharks are an integral part of our oceans ecosystem."
The Disco Shark is a great photo opp for a "shark selfie," and a portion of the proceeds goes to Oceana
and Shark Team One. Based on the donation amount, supporters even get to take home a memento, ranging from a Disco Shark keychain to an 8-foot Disco Shark sculpture.
"We should celebrate them, not fear them," said McHugh. "With this campaign, I want people to have their very on Disco Shark as a reminder. I will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the conservation societies Oceana and Shark Savers One."
This is Disco Shark's first visit to the Hamptons, but it's not its first out of water experience. The Disco Shark was a fixture at Coachella
's Yuma Tent.
"We are thrilled to be part of the Disco Shark Campaign and excited to help raise awareness of shark conservation at The Club at Philippe
", said Abraham Merchant of Merchant Hospitality, Inc. "Since we are in the heart of the Hamptons
, we knew Philippe had an obligation to join forces with Kevin McHugh to spread this vital message to our customers."
The Club at Philippe is located at 44 Three Mile Harbor Road in East Hampton. To donate to the Disco Shark campaign, visit www.gofundme.com.
