There is no better example of the American charitable spirit than when successful business entrepreneurs devote their expertise, time, and treasure in support of those less fortunate. Such is the case of Brian Travers of Travers & Associates and his Day One Foundation, which held its 3rd Annual Golf Outing last week raising in excess of $70,000 for the Stony Brook Children's Hospital.

Originally inspired by his wife Michelle, an elementary
school teacher who was dishearten by the amount of children coming to class lacking the proper school supplies, Brian and Michelle began personally purchasing the supplies necessary for the children in need. It was from this private charitable effort that the Day One Foundation was created in 2010 by Travers and whose stated mission is to assist children and their families who are less fortunate in regards to educational opportunities and better healthcare. Of which many children and their families, even on affluent Long Island, face a future with neither.
The day of the outing was picture perfect with players arriving to the beautiful Woodside Acres Country Club in Muttontown in iconic North Shore late spring weather. After a delicious and expansive buffet breakfast, attendees were treated to a golf exhibition by 2008 Senior Long Drive Champion Dan Boever who tours the world with his amazing and very humorous golf show. We were all doubled over in laughter and amazed at the accuracy and distance Boever achieved with such an absolutely effortless swing. (http://www.danboever.com)
At 11:00 a.m. the foursomes scattered to different holes for the shotgun start on this very well manicured and challenging but fair course. At the turn there was a putting contest and along the course were distance, straight drive, hole-in-one, closest to the pin, and a 50/50 par 3 hole contest. There were also 1st-3rd Place awards for foursome team low scores.

The day was rounded out by cocktails, dinner and awards starting at 4:00 p.m. in the classic Woodside Acres clubhouse. An extensive silent auction filled the hall between the bar and the dining room, a live auction and a raffle with exceptional items from a Golf vacation in Ireland, donated by John McLaughlin of North and West Coast Links, to sports memorabilia, golf equipment, wine tours, and a vast variety of other eclectic treasures generously donated by local merchants and service providers in support of the Day One Foundation. Along with North and West Coast Links and, obviously, Travers & Associates, the event's major sponsors included Mass Mutual Financial Group of Greater Long Island, Security Benefit, and Moet
This year's Day One Foundation event honorees were Steve Louro, CEO of Professional Group Plans, and Dr. Laura Hogan of Stony Brook Children's Hospital. Travers presented commemorative plaques to each recipient with each honoree noting the contribution of the Day One Foundation to the health and welfare of the children and families its serves.
I attended the outing as a guest of friend and fellow Hamptons.com contributor Ann Liguori
who's own charity, The Ann Liguori Foundation, also supports children's healthcare initiatives. Commerce in support of charity, a responsibility that all entrepreneurs and business leaders should take as seriously as Brian Travers. Travers & Associates and their associate sponsors in support of the Day One Foundation and its support of the Stony Brook Children's Hospital, making a difference one day, one family, one child at a time!
