Thousands Of Temporary Census Jobs Available

Southampton - A struggling economy and faltering job market have many East End families on the ropes, but temporary relief is in sight for thousands of job-seeking New Yorkers. The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced plans to hire as many as 750,000 temporary workers by May to help with the 2010 Census, which is already underway.

With good pay, flexible hours and paid training, the jobs are perfectly suited for those looking for part-time work, those between jobs, or anyone who wants to earn extra money while lending an invaluable helping hand - all without leaving their community. Job responsibilities include locating households and conducting brief interviews with residents, typically those who fail to send in their census questionnaires by the April 1 deadline.

Census-taker positions are open to U.S. citizens age 18 and over, and most require a valid driver license and use of a vehicle. To apply, call the Census Bureau's toll-free Jobs Line at 1-866-861-2010 and schedule an appointment to take the employment test - which must be done on-site.

For more job information or to download an application, visit http://2010.census.gov/2010censusjobs/. In addition to a photo ID, applicants must bring either a valid passport or birth certificate to the test site.

Whether or not you're looking for work, our community's future depends on your participation in this year's census. The results decide the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funds each year - money communities need for schools, hospitals, roadways, fire and police stations, and more. Without your help, our infrastructure would suffer, and critical funding for health care, education and job-training could dry up.

Census data are also used to determine government representation. An accurate headcount ensures that you have a voice in Albany, and that Suffolk County gets the aid and attention it deserves. And with the new, shorter questionnaires, participating couldn't be easier. So take just a few minutes out of your day to complete and mail your census forms.
