POLICE: Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident

Southampton - On Tuesday, February 2, Southampton Town Police received multiple calls of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of County Road 51 and County Road 63 (Lake Avenue) in the hamlet of Northampton.

Investigation revealed that a Suffolk County Transit Bus was proceeding northbound on CR 51 when the operator of a 2000 Ford Focus entered the intersection from CR 63 after passing a stop sign, and was struck by the Transit bus.

The operator of the Ford has been identified as Michael Brown, age 21, of Greenport. Brown was pronounced at the scene and removed to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office in Hauppauge.

The bus was operated by John Bravata, age 56, of Ronkonkoma. There were 14 occupants on the bus and all were removed from the scene to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Brookhaven Hospital in East Patchogue.

There were no serious injuries among the bus occupants or driver. The bus was removed from the scene for further inspection by Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Unit and NYS Dept. of Transportation Motor Carrier Unit. Both of whom were on the scene. The Ford was impounded to Southampton Town Police for further investigation.

In addition to Southampton Town Police the following Agencies also responded to the accident: Flanders Northampton Ambulance, Westhampton Ambulance, East Quogue Fire Department Ambulance, Hampton Bays Ambulance, Riverhead Ambulance, Riverhead Fire Department and Suffolk County DPW.

As a result of the investigation County Road 51 northbound between CR 63 and the County Center was closed for approximately three hours and 45 minutes. County Road 63 southbound between Old Westhampton Rd and CR 51 was closed for approximately four hours and 30 minutes.
