A Brief History Of The Sag Harbor Whaling Fleet

Thursday, December 7, 2017

11:00 am

Richard Doctorow, Collections Manager and Curator of the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum, will give a brief history of the whaling fleet of Sag Harbor, which was the largest whaling port in the state of NY and the 10th largest in the country. Doctorow will discuss the fleet's "pre-history" foundations in the early Southampton drift-whale and shore-whaling trades, the advent of long range voyages beginning in the 1780s, and the fleet's rise and fall in 1874. Co-sponsored by the Southampton Historical Museum, Rogers Memorial Library and the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum.
