Saturday, October 7, 2017 - Tuesday, October 31, 2017

10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Captain David Hand VI; Revolutionary war hero, shore whaling captain, and real-life inspiration for James Fenimore Cooper’s Leather Stocking Tales, had a colorful and mysterious life. After the war, Hand returned to Sag Harbor and began a career as a shore whaler but controversy continued. Captain David Hand was married five times - four wives died mysteriously, one outlived him. Today, Captain Hand and his five wives remain buried in the Oakland cemetery, with epitaphs that stir the imagination. Artist Sabina Streeter’s works reinterpret the infamous Captain and his five unfortunate wives.
