Oystering And Early Conservation On Long Island

Sunday, October 6, 2013

2:00 pm

Nicole Menchise, Librarian/Archivist at the Oyster Bay Historical Society, will speak about the decade of the 1880s when oysters were imperiled by demand and beset by spills of waste and refuse in the waters surrounding western Long Island. She will discuss the work of Eugene G. Blackford, Commissioner of Fisheries, who lobbied for cleaner waters and supported some of the earliest conservation legislature in New York.
