Hampton Bays - As wintry weather sweeps in, it only seems appropriate that Bob's Glove Run, which was postponed last month, will take place this Sunday at Red Creek Park in Hampton Bays. Bob's Mug Run, originally scheduled for this weekend in Southampton instead will run at a future date yet to be determined.
The Glove Run was supposed to go off on Nov. 16 but was pushed back because Race Director Bob Beattie was holding out for higher-quality gloves. "I wasn't satisfied with the gloves," he said. "I wanted something better this year." He has since acquired fleece gloves from California that met his standards. As is tradition at the Glove Run, entrants will receive free gloves rather than the traditional tee-shirt given away at many road races here and across the country. It's an idea devised by Ralph Epifanio more than 15 years ago. Beattie ran his first Glove Run in 1997. Since then, the weather has dictated whether the gloves are put to use. Last year, East Hampton grad Ben Turnbull won with a time of 14 minutes, 22 seconds, with Southampton's Christina Schaefer winning it for the women.
Sunday's four-kilometer race, which is sponsored by the East End Road & Trail Runner's Club, is set for a 10:30 a.m. start. To register, visit islandrunning.com.
As for the Mug Run, Beattie said it could be moved to January. However, the race may be simply cancelled. "Schedule-wise, I'm not sure I can pull that off," Beattie said.

Guest (Ralph Epifanio) from Deland, Florida says:
I believe the first "World Famous Glove Run" was in 1981. The 5K, staged in Oakdale, LI drew 500 runners on a frigid December day. By 1983, when I offered moreno wool gloves, pizza (about 300 large pies) and hot chocolate for all the finishers, it had grown to 1100 finishers. --Ralph Epifanio
