Blas Blows Away Competition Of 400-Plus To Win Koziarz 5K

Westhampton Beach - From the distance came a blue blur, barreling up Library Avenue in Westhampton Beach with no one else in sight. When Antonio Blas reached the finish line for the 18th Annual Joe Koziarz Memorial 5K, he broke out in a smile. He was one-third of the way home to victory in the Hamptons Triple Crown showdown.

More than 400 racers toed the starting line and set off down Main Street, but it was Blas and a half-dozen others who broke free from the pack early. Blas, who is part of the Centre Realty team that has taken the regional running circuit by storm, separated from them and then was all by himself. He touched down at the finish line in 16:34 - a pace of 5:20 per mile - to win by 35 seconds over runner-up Glen Carnes.

Blas holds the top spot heading into the latter two stages of the Crown - the Quogue Hudsy 5K on Oct. 4 and the Hurricane Educational 5K a week later. His time was one second faster than that of last year's winner, Will Kearns, who finished up a standout four-year career at Westhampton Beach High School. Two years ago, Jorge Real, another Centre Realty runner who won this summer's Firecracker 8K in Southampton, captured the Koziarz crown with a time of 15:44.

Carnes (17:09) held off Jonathan Farnham for second place; Farnham (17:15) did however manage to shave 77 seconds off last year's time, which earned him seventh overall. Hampton Bays' Angel Rojas, who was third in 2007, finished settled for fourth (17:29). Victor Manuel Garcia ran fifth (18:12).

Westhampton's own Laura Brown finished first in the women's division, clocking a 19:22 to take 14th place overall. Lauren Laviola of Shelter Island grabbed second in 20:06, and she was closely followed by another Westhampton runner, Heather Wrisett (20:14). Nicola Hallenborg (20:52) and Susan Bayat (21:38) rounded out the women's top five.

The race commemorated the life of Joe Koziarz, an avid runner and funeral director at the McFarland & Koziarz Funeral Home in Westhampton Beach who died in 1995. Hank Beck of the Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce helped organize the day's festivities along with Koziarz' son, Michael. Beck estimated that the race would raise more than $10,000 for area charities, including Southampton Town PAL, the Koziarz Hurricane Scholarship Fund and the Peconic Bay Medical Center Emergency Room.

"We give all the money away for this event," said Beck. "We keep nothing. It's a real community benefit. This is a giveback."

Beck was ecstatic to see this year's race eclipse last year's registration total by roughly 100 runners and walkers. He said that pushing the race up to Saturday, as opposed to Sunday, might have been responsible for the rush of entrants. On a hot summer morning spent pounding the village's scenic roads, many of those participants indulged in a spray of cool water provided by one of the Westhampton Fire Department's trucks. The race concluded with a raffle, in which prizes and gift certificates to local establishments were given out, as well as a four-day Carnival cruise.

Local participants littered the list of division winners. On the women's side, Southampton's Jade Kalbacher won the 12-and-under group by running a 26:34, while Westhampton High star Molly Bennett held off Karlyn Sabo of Southampton to take top honors among the 13-15-year-olds (23:40). Elizabeth Anderson of East Moriches won the 19-29 age group (21:48), and Westhampton Beach's Jennifer Nicolau took the 30-39 bunch by running a 22:50. Rhonda Nieder, also of Westhampton Beach, just edged Southampton's Anne Pontani in the 50-59 age group, running a 22:05 to Pontani's 22:10.

For the men, promising youngster Dylan McAllister, 14, of Quogue won the 13-15 men's group easily, posting a 19:16 for the division win and 13th place overall. Ray Hensley of Westhampton ran at a pace of 6:42 to win the 16-18 group in 20:47. Rojas captured the 19-29 division by finishing fourth overall. Lawrence Farrell of East Quogue took home yet another title in the 60-69 age group, registering a 22:28. Of the 70-79 year olds, Blaire Stauffer of Sag Harbor stood above all, finishing in 26:06.
