Mia Grosjean: Printing World History From The Family Album

"When I first opened my Mother's 1937 and 1938 photo albums it only took me several minutes to realize I couldn't just leave these images hidden between the pages," Mia Gorsjean begins her introduction to an unique exhibit of historic photographs depicting her grandfather, Ambassador Joseph Edward Davies' trip from Cherbourg to Moscow aboard The Queen Mary.

"Although they were worn, faded and no more than two by three inches in dimension, I wanted to print them so big that I could walk inside them and hear what people were saying. I wanted to eavesdrop on my Grandfather's and Mother's life," Grosjean continues. "For the most part the images were taken by my mother's sister, Rahel Davies. Mother and Aunt Rahel exchanged photos and all sorts of momentoes over the years... Sadly my Aunt died unexpectedly in 1976, so this is a Valentine to her. She had such a beautiful eye! I am simply the curator and printer."

The exhibit, meant to be viewed like a picture trip to Moscow, takes the onlooker on several different Atlantic crossings of The Queen Mary in the late 1930s. An opening reception celebrating the exhibit will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 at Sylvester & Co. on Main Street in Sag Harbor. The photographs will remain on display into mid December.
