Wyclef Jean, who is Haitian, "Hope For Haiti Now" aired on more than 25 network and cable stations on Friday, January 22, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., bringing together the worlds of music and film for a most worthy cause.
This was an evening of songs performed by a myriad of well-known and well-loved performers in New York City, Los Angeles and London, interspered with candid pleas for initial and continued assistance from a Who's Who's of Hollywood's elite, who also manned the telephone lines, accompanied by candid facts and images as reported by
Anderson Cooper live in Haiti. Additionally, the music performed during the fundraiser is also available on i-Tunes.

Wyclef Jean, as well as Haitians living in the U.S., and those with loved ones and family members still unaccounted for in Haiti, managed to additionally humanize for viewers the incredible and heroic acts of kindness brought forth by medical personnel, political leaders, charitable organizations and thousands of people whose main goal is to merely offer their good thoughts, prayers, assistance and funds (in any amount) to their fellow man during this horrific time for the people of Haiti.
Berry focused on the orphans, Eastwood and Damon focused on the peacekeepers and noted that as a result of the earthquake the United Nations suffered the single largest loss of life of representatives; Roberts focused on the children; Rock on behalf of Ali focused on the spiritual importance of charity, and DiCaprio focused on the doctors, nurses and other medical personnel - but all focused on the overwhelming need for continued assistance, and most importantly that the Haitian people not be forgotten once headlines are diverted to another topic.

All the musical numbers performed included heartfelt renditions of songs that represent hope, perseverance, spiritualness, gratitude, and remembrance, and were indeed stirring in their emotional intent, thus reminding all of us yet again that music can in fact be - as sung by
Stevie Wonder and written by
Paul Simon - "A Bridge Over Troubled Water."
Some sombering pre-earthquake facts about Haiti, which is considered one of the world's poorest nations with about 80 percent of its inhabitants surviving on approximately $2 a day, and where one in three children die before the age of five, together with the present desperate situation that exists may appear almost insurmountable to those watching the updates unfold in the comfort of their homes, however, Friday's message was clear - don't turn your back - don't forget these people - give what you can in any amount - and most importantly remember that "There but for the grace of God go I." In closing at Friday' event,
Wyclef Jean performed traditional Haitian music and remarked that "From the ashes we shall rise."
It has been reported that prior to Friday's telethon, personal donations had already been made by
Sandra Bullock - $1 million; DiCaprio - $1 million; and Clooney - $1 million, among others, and as of Sunday reports estimate the evening raised in excess of $57 million.
Friday's event will benefit Partners In Health, UNICEF, Red Cross, World Food Programme, Clinton/Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, and the Yele Haiti Foundation. To learn more about "Hope For Haiti Now" go to
