Southampton -
ArtHamptons will return again on July 8 through July 11, as one of the major events of the Hamptons and the summer art season. Now entering its third successful year, ArtHamptons has already established itself as one of the top new fine art fairs in America as well as one of the major events of the Hamptons. In 2009, over 5,000 art enthusiasts streamed through. This year ArtHamptons will feature 93 highly respected U.S. and international galleries from six countries and 35 cities, the largest number of galleries ever in the show, including for the first time galleries from Russia, Argentina, Spain and eight galleries from Korea, as well as from the U.K. Seven Hamptons area galleries will be participating, as well. More than 600 artists ranging from the post-war to contemporary generation of art stars will be represented in the show. The exhibition will include a vetted selection of 7,000 art works valued at $300 million.
ArtHamptons will move two streets west of the Bridgehampton Historical Society (last year's location) to a much expanded site which will better accommodate the growth, traffic flow and special events program. Now held at Bridgehampton's Sayre Park's five acres, the new location will enable the construction of a spectacular 50,000 square foot modular building (the largest ever in the Hamptons), a magnificent 30,000 square foot Sculpture Garden/Hospitality Park and convenient and free on-site parking.
Only at ArtHamptons will visitors and residents on the East End of Long Island, NY, an international destination for the wealthy and a century-old community of artists, get to witness such a respected line-up of international upper-tier galleries assembled in such an impeccable museum-like setting. In addition to paintings, works on paper, photography and prints, the art fair will offer world-class glass art, ceramics and l'objects d'art. From the masters to important contemporary offerings, there will be something for everyone's budget level.

It's an art book festival, a first in the Hamptons! What a great opportunity to meet, mingle and share stories, at one time, with many of the most distinguished writers/artists around today. Each writer/artist is here to meet you and sign their book for you. Books are available for sale - and then immediate signing. Each author will present their vision for the book onstage, briefly, as part of the action.
D. Frederick Baker with co-author
Carolyn Lane and
Robin Chase, granddaugther to
William Merrit Chase signing, William Merritt Chase: The Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase, Volume IV. This fourth volume in a four-part catalog raissonne on Chase covers Chase's paintings of the 1880s and early 1890s and reproduces a variety of paintings that together give marvelous insight into his exemplary depiction of light and shadow.
Helen Harrison and Constance Ayers Denne - "Hamptons Bohemia" - An unspoiled coastline bathed in spectacular light - just far enough from the Manhattan bustle - made the Hamptons seductive for generations of creative types. 'Hamptons Bohemia:' Two Centuries of Artists and Writers on the Beach, is an entertaining survey of the personalities who found a summer or year-round haven on the southeastern end of Long Island. The story begins with 19th century figures like James Fenimore Cooper. Then came genteel landscape painters. By the 1950s the era of
Jackson Pollock, William de Kooning, Frank O'Hara, among others, Bohemia was in full swing. Since then the Hamptons have become a clubby getaway for artists who've already made it.
Elliott Erwitt - With a touch of humor and an eye for the humane, Elliott Erwitt's black and white photographs reveal the most basic and candid human emotions. He developed his vision during the post-war rise of documentary photojournalism, and has captured many of life's most poignant ironies through an amusing vernacular. Born in Paris and raised in California and New York, Erwitt pursued a photographic career in journalism, fashion and print advertisement. He is a member of the prestigious Magnum agency since 1953. His photographs are in museums around the world, including MOMA, NY; Smithsonian, Art Institute of Chicago, and Kunsthaus, Zurich.
John Gruen - Facing the Artist: Portraits by John Jonas Gruen June 3 through August 8. Gruen has made it his business to be the right place at the right time. During his many years in Manhattan, Gruen - critic, author and keen cultural observer - has moved with ease among dancers, musicians, playwrights and poets. He seems, however, to have reserved a special interest in painters and sculptors. Through the year, Gruen has captured many of them in his photographs. The collection shown here came from an exhibition of his work at The Whitney Museum of Art, organized by
Elisabeth Sussman, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography.
Marika Herskovic - NY Abstract Expressionism, American Abstract Expressionism, NY Abstract Expressionism provides a complete documentation of the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals held initially as the 9th Street Exhibition and continued at the Stable Gallery in NYC from 1951-1957, showing the work of the pioneers of the NY School Abstract Expressionist Artists. American Abstract Expressionism is a follow-up to NY Abstract Expressionism.
Sue Kwon - Street Level collects 20 years of documentary and commercial photography by esteemed New York photographer Kwon. Her subjects include some of Hip Hop's finest, such as the BeastieBoys, Biggie Smalls and the Wu-Tang Clan, as well as portraits and street scenes from New York's most charismatic neighborhoods - Little Italy, Chinatown, Coney Island, the Lower East Side and a pre-Guilliani Times Square.
Ellen G. Landau - Jackson Pollock: The role of the art historian as biographer is beset with contradictions, an artist's life and art being neither mutually exclusive nor synonymous. Balanced in his life on the edge of destruction and in his art on that of innovation, Pollock mirrored a chaotic world, one in which humans seemed to have lost control. This book treats Pollock's personal life, creative work, and cultural mileu as discrete elements that produce a gradually developing image of Pollock as rebellious cowboy or counterculture loner.
Diane McManus Jensen - The Art of Collecting: An Intimate Tour Inside Private Art Collections with Advice on Starting Your Own reveals private collectors' discoveries of art and artists, and the often intriguing journey along the way. This book offers readers a rare opportunity to explore 23 art collections and provides a glimpse into how they have evolved. Featuring lush photography of the collections, and personal interviews with each of the collectors, 'The Art of Collecting' also includes essays on various topics by experts in each of their fields, offering insights into areas such as: lighting, framing, insurance and more. The book serves two purposes: providing readers with a first-hand glimpse into magnificent collections, and inspiring them to embark on their own journey of collecting.
Klaus Ottman - Fairfield Porter Raw - The Creative Process of An American Master, Rackstraw Downes. Ottman is the Robert Lehman Curator at the
Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, and teaches theory of art and exhibitions at the School of Visual Arts. He will be signing books he has written from two recent exhibitions he organized at the Parrish Art Museum. Fairfield Porter: Raw.
Dan Rattiner - In the Hamptons Too - As the editor and publisher of
Dan's Papers, the area's popular free newspaper, Rattiner has been living in and covering the Hamptons for over 50 years, and has watched it change from sleepy backwater of fishing villages and potato farms to a playground for the rich and famous. In this follow-up to his popular book, "In the Hamptons," Rattiner continues to regale us with tales of the people who live, work and play in one of America's best-known summer colonies.
John Torreano - "Drawing by Seeing" - "Why can't I draw what I see?" Long-time drawing instructor and celebrated artist Torreano answers this much-asked question in "Drawing by Seeing." In this accessible and visually engaging book, Torreano shares the lessons, based on gestalt theory, that he has used to successfully teach thousands of students to draw accurately and with confidence.
"Snails Gallop" Performance Art Unveiled at Preview Party, July 8 - "Snail's Gallop" is an answer to the question of how much ecological awareness and physical expression are being requested from human beings in a time of excessively reproduced images through multimedia and technology. In the performance, the Korean artist Kon Yong Lee squats down and continuously takes small steps forward little by little. While he advances, he draws lines on his left side and right side and leaves his foot marks naturally on those lines. The piece is about 60 feet long. This body drawing represents the expression of the behavior of human being in a physical and ecological way and emblematically shows the history of human creation. Therefore the "Snail's Gallop" is appropriate to be performed for an opening ceremony.
• Meet the Authors, Sun. July 11, 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.
