Clever Little Lies, a “comedy of sex, love and secrets,” by Joe DiPietro will be the opening play of Hampton Theatre Company’s 2017-2018 season. The play is a “laugh-filled story of long-term love and marriage, for better . . . and for worse,” according to Terry Brennan, general manager of the Hampton Theatre Company.
DiPietro’s play, which originally premiered in 2013 at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, is set in the suburbs at the home of married couple Bill Sr. and Alice. Their son, Billy, just revealed to his father that he has fallen in love with another woman. Billy is also married and has a newborn. Alice suspects that something is awry and the tension plays out in comedic fashion as Alice, Bill Sr., Billy, and his wife come together for coffee.
“Mr. DiPietro’s script is exceptionally actor-friendly, featuring lots of lively give-and-take among the characters, whose personalities are relatable and whose intentions are usually honest,” remarked Ken Jaworowski in his New York Times review of the play.
The HTC production stars Ed Brennan, Carolann DiPirro, Terrance Fiore, and Diana Marbury. Marbury, the HTC artistic director, plays Alice – the matriarch of the family. Fiore plays her husband Bill, Brennan plays the unfaithful Billy, and DiPirro is Jane, his wife. Andrew Botsford, whose most recent work includes Theresa Rebeck’s Dead Accounts, which ran in January 2016 at the HTC, will direct the production.
Clever Little Lies will run for three weeks from Thursday, October 26 to Sunday, November 12. Showtimes are Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. There will be an additional matinee on Saturday, November 11 at 2:30 p.m.
