Filmmaker, artist, writer, and musician Michael Holman is coming to Southampton this spring. The renowned artist will present Confessions of a Subculturalist, an exciting spoken word performance that he wrote and will perform at Southampton Arts Center (SAC), on Friday, March 24th at 7 p.m. The unique 90-minute routine will trace the artist's own personal experiences being an artist in New York City.

"Having been right in the heart of it, Michael Holman offers a very personal portrait of the eclectic and outrageous art and hip-hop scene of downtown New York in the 1980's," noted Amy Kirwin, Southampton Arts Center Director of Programs.

Told through story-telling, audio and film clips, Confessions of a Subculturalist will strive to convey contemporary, American Popular, and Underground Urban Culture. Holman is a pioneer in the Downtown New York Art Scene and Uptown Hip-Hop Scene, and founded the band Gray with painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. The performance will also cover The New York City Breakers, a dance crew Holman created, managed and choreographed, and the story of this internationally celebrated dance crew in the 80s. The group famously performed for President Ronald Reagan, Prince Andrew of Great Britain, the King and Queen of Norway, and many other notable people.

Many other incredible events will be showcased in Confessions of a Subculturalist - including Holman's own personal encounter with London Punk Rock impresario Malcolm McLaren in 1981. Holman will bring his years of experience in New York culture to Southampton, and his influence will definitely be conveyed as he shaped the culture of New York we know today.

"Any lover of the music, dance, and the visual art of this era will not want to miss his very special performance," added Kirwin.

Tickets to Confessions of a Subculturalist are $10.
