The Springs Community Theater Company (SCTC) is off to see the wizard this fall. Founded in 2005 by Barbara Mattson, an Assistant Office Manager at Douglas Elliman in East Hampton, and Jayne Freedman, a mother of five and owner of Jayne E’s Family Cuts in East Hampton, the local theater group is celebrating its 10th anniversary by presenting “The Wizard Of Oz” at Guild Hall.
“There’s lots of love, laughter and camaraderie packed into this grass roots theater company that formed to fill what was perceived as a community theater void in the East Hampton area,” shared Mattson. “Members of the company pitch into make costumes and build sets.”
SCTC’s inaugural show was a fairy tale, “Once Upon a Mattress,” which is the musical version of “the Princess and the Pea.” The production was held at the Springs Presbyterian Church. The company followed that up with “South Pacific” at Guild Hall, “Li”l Abner” at the Pierson High School in Sag Harbor, Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall, and “Peter Pan,” once again at the John Drew Theater.
The group is excited to follow the yellow brick road to the Hamptons for a milestone production. “SCTC is proud and thrilled to be back at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall with their production of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz,” noted Mattson.
The beloved musical, based on the 1939 film, follows Dorothy and her dog, Toto, who are whisked away in their house, when a tornado rips through Kansas. The duo is transported to the magical land of Oz, where they follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard. Along the way, they come across a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage.
