East Hampton - The Mulford Repertory Theatre returns to the bucolic setting of the Mulford Barn this summer to present two comic works in repertory: "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife" by
Charles Busch and "Miss Electricity" by
Kathryn Walat. Now in their fourth season as an Equity repertory company, Mulford Rep is highly regarded as a talented and accomplished ensemble of professional actors, gifted with cunning comic timing steeped in well-seasoned acting bravado. Under the inventive artistic direction of
Kate Mueth, the Mulford Rep Theatre promises to once again fill the historic 1721 Mulford Barn with laughter and invites East End residents and summer visitors to a fun filled evening of mirth while visiting our local treasure, the Mulford Farm Museum, one of New York's most significant English Colonial Farmsteads.
"The idea of getting an audience to experience both an amazing 18th century structure while rolling in laughter at a play seemed like a great way to introduce a new venue to people not familiar with the Mulford Farm Museum," said
Richard Barons, Executive Director of the East Hampton Historical Society, sponsor of the theater company. The ancient wooden beams of the barn, the beautiful grassy lawns, the colonial farmstead outbuilding situated in the middle of East Hampton's Main Street historic district creates a magical backdrop for an eve that is both exciting and dreamy, an experience that is in sync with East Hampton Historical Society's support of Mulford Rep's mission: to provide accessible professional theatrical productions in an historic setting for children and adults.and Mulford Rep delivers just that - with two comic productions that will be performed on alternate evenings, sure to entertain and delight!
"The Tale of the Allergist's Wife," written by Busch, explores the Upper West Side milieu of aspiring intellectual and middle-aged upper class matron Marjorie Taub (Mueth, her loving but ineffectual doctor husband (
Josh Gladstone), the sudden reappearance of her childhood friend (
Licia James Zegar) who seems to have had the life that Marjorie only dreamed of. Throw in Marjorie's shrew of a mother (
Lydia Franco Hodges) and a watchful doorman (
Joe DeSane) and the ridiculous unravels! This devilishly funny production is geared for adult sensibilities.

The Mulford Barn, constructed in 1721, is one of the most intact early 18th century English-plan barn forms in New York State and is recognized as an outstanding example of early 18th century construction methods and materials. The location of the barn also provides insight into the history of settlement patterns in this region of New York. The Mulford Barn was evaluated by the State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in 1990 and deemed the second most important 18th century barn in New York State.
